History: Ted Double Duty Radcliffe - so-called because he could pitch and catch - had a 30-year career in the Negro leagues, playing for over 15 teams. Radcliffe was one of black baseball's most popular players. The Black Barons were a part of the Negro American League.
History: The '40 Cats featured an outfielder named Henry Prince Oana, a Hawaiian player whose professional career began with encouragement from none other than Ty Cobb, who had seen Oana play as a youngster on a barnstorming team in Japan. Oana's Hawaiian heritage would challenge the nature of color barriers in professional baseball during a fascinating career that also saw him transition from an outfielder to a pitcher while in Fort Worth to make a late-career return to the Major Leagues.

History: In 1948, the Black Barons featured a precocious teenage outfielder named Willie Mays, who had already made a name for himself as a multi-sport star at Fairfield Industrial High School in nearby Fairfield, Alabama. Mays played for the Chattanooga Choo-Choos during the 1947 season but opted to play closer to home in Birmingham for the 1948 season, and helped the Black Barons defeat the mighty Kansas City Monarchs to claim the 1948 Negro American League pennant.
