The greatest pitcher and top drawing card in Negro league history, LeRoy (Satchel) Paige was a hard-throwing, charismatic showman who helped pave the way for Jackie Robinson to integrate professional baseball. Although the mischievous Paige tailored his age to suit his fancy, he was most likely born in 1906, in the poor black section of Mobile, Alabama. He acquired his nickname by hauling satchels at the local train depot when he was seven. Then baseball entered his life.
